Gift of Life Continues Life-saving Work with 3rd Annual Walk for Life
February 10th Walk Dedicated to Raising Awareness for Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplants
Every year, thousands of people need a potentially life-saving transplant. An organization dedicated to raising awareness for bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants, Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, is scheduled to raise awareness through the organization’s yearly walk.
Gift of Life’s 3rd Annual 5K Walk for Life is scheduled to take place on February 10th at 9 a.m. at the Palm Beach Plaza on the campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Everyone is invited to attend.
Gift of Life’s goal is to help children and adults suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, other cancers and genetic disorders find donors for blood and bone marrow transplants. In fact, Walk for Life is the only event in South Florida with a goal of raising awareness within the community about the need to increase the number of donors in the worldwide bone marrow registry. All proceeds raised from the Walk are used to add new donors to the registry, specifically ethnically diverse donors. Gift of Life Walks have added 1,500 donors to the registry, which has resulted in 24 matches for patients in need.
Gift of Life began in 1991 when founder Jay Feinberg was diagnosed with leukemia and told he would need a bone marrow transplant to live. Feinberg soon learned that the best chance of finding a genetic match is someone with a similar ethnic background. Feinberg’s family launched a grassroots campaign to enroll new donors from around the world and of varying ethic backgrounds. Four years later, the very last donor tested at the very last drive turned out to be Feinberg’s perfect match. Feinberg received the transplant and devoted his life to finding matches for other patients in need.
Gift of Life’s Walk for Life is the sole fundraiser for registering volunteer donors and matching patients and recipients in need here in South Florida. Gift of Life has registered over 215,000 volunteer donors and facilitated more than 2,500 transplants for patients in need.
The Gift of Life 5K Walk/Run in Boca Raton begins at 9 a.m., followed by a Welcome Ceremony at 10 a.m. At 10:15 a.m., a life-saving donor will be introduced to a recipient.
The introduction will be followed by the co-ed walk and run at 10:30 a.m. After the walk, participants are invited to a celebration of food and music, plus a fun-filled kids area.
Advance registration is $25 for adults and $30 the day of the walk and $15 for students.
